How to unlock Your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs offer greater functionality and ease of use as compared to manual keys. However, they do require batteries that will eventually wear out and will need to be replaced. If your Volvo keyfob is only working intermittently, your battery might be failing and you'll need to replace it in the near future.

There are simple steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. First, find a clean work area to carry out the process. Make a list of all the tools you'll need. Then, locate the battery's hole, and open it using the flathead, a coin, or a similar tool. After that, carefully remove the battery by lifting the side closest to the hook for the key-ring. Wear rubber gloves to protect the electronic contact surfaces.

After the battery has been removed, place the new one in its socket. Make sure that the positive side of the battery is facing up, and the clips are all seated. Slide the cover towards the key-ring until it loosens and it falls off. Remove the cover to reveal the hidden key blade. You can use it to unlock your car from the driver's door if you have lost or damaged the key fob.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Modern vehicles are equipped with keyfobs which do more than simply unlock and lock the doors. They can also perform other functions such as summoning and auto parking the vehicle. In fact, the new Volvo XC60 can even remotely start the engine using key fob buttons. But how exactly does it work?

First, find a clean, flat surface where you can lay out all the necessary items for this project. Lay the fob on top of the surface with the Volvo logo facing up. Then make use of a flathead screwdriver or coin or similar tool to switch the battery hatch from the open position. Be careful not to touch the electronic contact surfaces of the fob with your tools, since this could cause the key fob to cease functioning properly.

When the hatch is opened, slide the battery into its socket and ensure it is in the correct position with the positive (+) side facing upwards. After the clips are secured into place, replace the cover of the battery and then reassemble the fob.

When you press the unlock button just once and the alarm will removed and the driver's doors will be unlocked. If you press it again, you can unlock all the doors and tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to roll down the windows during hot days or to let in fresh air prior to getting behind the wheel. If you'd like to go further, the keyfob can be used to activate the ERS which will start the climate control system in your vehicle. It will warm or cool the vehicle to the desired temperature levels when the vehicle is parked.

How to Change the Battery

If your key fob isn't locking or unlocking your vehicle as it did in the past and it's possible that it's time to replace the battery. The battery can be replaced using a flathead screwdriver pry bar made of plastic or other small tools. First look for the small hole that the backup / emergency key fob made of steel used to reside. After you have opened the fob, you can locate and remove the CR 2032 3V battery. Replace the battery and snap the fob.

Note: Certain older Volvo models have another type of battery which is the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have an average thickness of 7 tenths millimeters less than a CR2032, so you'll need to be extra cautious when replacing your battery.
